I noted a few days ago in the long list of New World complaints that the Azoth system irritated me more than any of the exploits or even the present economic woes plaguing the game. Effectively, my opinions on Azoth, which is essentially a reward currency that players may use to teleport to previously unlocked locations, are that Azoth is a very evident future cash-shop “convenience” that really hinders travel and exploration in a bad manner. I’ll paraphrase a heavily upvoted Reddit post that shares my feelings about the “travel tax”:
“I generally end myself jogging to most destinations in order to save money on Azoth. I’m not lazy; I’m just weary of wasting a large portion of my free time jogging or worrying about how much Azoth I have. […] When I want to accomplish anything that requires me to go to numerous locations, having to choose between spending an inordinate amount of time running there OR stopping what I’m doing in the middle of an activity to go grind Azoth isn’t pleasant. I don’t want to be concerned about running out of Azoth to participate in a group activity that I saw advertised on the recruiting channel. I don’t want to spend all of my Azoth pool traveling from town to town signing up for wars or invasions. I don’t want to pay over 300 Azoth to go two towns with half of my belongings in my baggage. If you wish to switch your primary weapon builds between PVP and PVE at mastery level 20, it costs 200 Azoth. […] Fast travel should not be this costly in a game without horses… Azoth’s cap should be increased, or the expense of travel should be reduced. This morning, I signed in, checked at my Azoth, and then logged out.”
I’ve always been a bit of an explorer player, and I’ve previously argued that it’s the ease of movement that draws me in; I spend more time exploring in games with vast travel systems that don’t punish me for happily journeying to the furthest regions of the world. MMOs that make travel incredibly difficult are a turn-off for me as an explorer, yet I see why they are appealing to achievers who see mapping as yet another goal to complete.
New World’s travel system, on the other hand, takes difficult travel and monetizes it (for the time being) with grind, making it even less tempting to a serious explorer. That seemed to me to be somewhat contradictory. If the game’s regional economy were functional and necessary right now, I may be able to grasp it better, but it isn’t.
In any case, I’d want to hear your thoughts. Is the tariff on New World’s transportation system genuinely enjoyable? Is there a more efficient method to do this? Which MMOs strike the sweet spot for you in terms of travel and exploration?
